All about SOP ( Statement of Purpose)

A statement of purpose, also referred to as an SOP is a reflection of one's personality that one portrays in front of the admission committee (Adcom) for getting enrolled in universities abroad and nowadays in some of the Indian universities. It is a chance of impressing the committee by presenting one's profile strongly through a short essay that describes the personality traits, which are not covered in the academic documents.

This essay consists of a gist of who you are, who you want to become, and how ready you are to pursue certain course in an institution. The essay seeks to understand the candidates life, the motivations for the chosen career path and the ultimate goal. Hence it is necessary to discuss the past incidents that has influenced the career path in a specific domain wherein the person aspires to grow by joining a course/ college.

Why is SOP important?
A well written SOP is very critical for admission. There are many aspects of a candidate's application that are inspected before finalising a decision. All documents and credentials are objective in nature but an SOP is the only document that is subjective aspect of the application. It's the only document in one's application that gives an edge to prove the uniqueness that makes one stand out from the crowd.
The format or template of an SOP is standard for most universities but the content varies with different kinds of courses.
